27 March 2010 Fisheye,The 365 Project

This is Barasti Bar.  This bar is located at the beach, near Mina Siyahi Hotel in Dubai.  This place is quite famous, I think, anyone who visited Dubai (and likes to party) would definitely know the place :)   They a restaurant and a grilled buffet as well and at night, there is a live DJ that plays mostly electronic music.  Really nice place to just chill and hang out.

Gear:  Canon 7D + Sigma 10mm f2.8
Settings: f3.5 | 1.5 | ISO 200

Post processing:

  • Some dodging and burning to bring out some details
  • Played with the contrast
  • Selective sharpening

Cheers!

22 March 2010 Landscape,The 365 Project

As far as I know, this is a floating restaurant.   This boat is just opposite the Barasti Bar.   Not much story to tell here, since I’ve never been inside that boat, maybe next time :)

Gear:  Canon 7D + Sigma 24-70 f2.8 HSM
Settings: f4.0 | 0.4 | ISO 800

Post processing:

  • Dodging and burning on some areas
  • Increased contrast

Cheers!

Today, there’s a boat show in Dubai; according to their website, this is the biggest boat show in the Middle East.  I didn’t really went inside the boat show event, because I don’t want to pay, plain and simple.  :)   Anyway, there was a free Dubai Water Taxi that takes you from the parking lot to the Marina side where the boat show is being hosted.  That boat ride was free!  That’s the best thing!  This was taken near the actual boat show, you can see the lights from the left side.

Gear: Canon 7D + Sigma 10mm f2.8
Settings: f5.0 | 1/15 | ISO 320

Post processing:

  • This image came from 3 exposures, which I blended manually in Photoshop;  It is a technique called DRI (Dynamic Range Increase)
  • Adjusted contrast and saturation
  • Applied some mild noise reduction and a touch of sharpening

I can’t believe it’s weekend again!

I have to do a 365 :)

There are plentiful of reasons why I wanted to do a 365 Project.  To those who are not familiar with 365, it means that I have to take a picture (and post one) everyday for the whole year, so that would be 365 pictures before 2011 kicks in.

Let me go back to why I wanted to do a 365 project; here are my main reasons:

1) Ignite more creativity
2) Challenge myself
3) Not only to become a better photographer but also to become a better visionary if you will.  In other words, I want to see beyond the pictures that I am taking and express it how I see it.

Now let’s talk about the picture :)

During New Year’s eve, I don’t really want to lug around and party carrying my 7D and bunch of lenses…  So I carry with me the next best thing :)   (at least to me!)  my Lumix LX3!

How I took it:

Gear: Lumix LX3
Settings: f2.0 | 6 seconds | ISO 80 | Dynamic Film Mode | I hold it against a railing , surprisingly it took me only 2 attempts to get a good shot, despite of a lot of people shouting and dancing :D

Post Processing:

  • This is a single exposure in JPG and processed in ACR (nothing really much since the Dyamic film mode of LX3 is pretty good)
  • Very minor cleanup with Photoshop CS4 (levels)

Here is another shot of mine taken with LX3 :

This was the same day I took the Dubai Marina picture I posted before.  Taken during sunset.

Dubai Marina is a great place to shoot, a lot of interesting subjects and not a lot of security guards that freaks out everytime they see a tripod.

Here is how I took this shot:

Settings: f6.4 | 1/25 | -3,0,+3 AEB

Gears:

Canon 7D + Tamron 18-270mm VC

Post processing:

  • Stacked and aligned from Photomatix
  • Digital blending in Photoshop, resized and watermarked.

Thanks for viewing.

/Mike
