8 February 2010 The 365 Project

They say 365 Project is about taking risks, I’ve read that a couple of times somewhere…  And I think, that’s 100% correct.  If I shoot landscape and architecture shots all the time, I am completely negating the purpose of the 365 project, which is about learning, discovery and creativity.  I need to step away of my comfort zone and try something new.  This is me taking another risk.  Well, I have been most of the time, since I started this project.

I don’t know how this idea came, but it occurred to me… and I’m glad it did.  Otherwise, I won’t have a day 39 :)   This is another nail biter, 50 minutes before day 40!

6 February 2010 The 365 Project

I have always played with this setup in my head; I had a lot of other versions… Probably I will have to explore those some other day.  But today, this is the one I wanted to share.   I wanted to take this picture with the sun up at the window but when I set up my equipments and started doing some test shots, it was too late.  Anyway, I think without the ambient light will do just fine for this particular scene.

I would like to thank my model for helping me with this one, would have been hard for me to do this pose and change the camera settings every now and then… that would have taken me hours, plus… I don’t think my back can pull this off :)

Gear:  Canon 7D + Tokina 11-16 + 430exii + 580exii
Settings: f14 | 1/250 @ ISO100

Strobist Info:
430exII + green gel on camera left @ 1/8 power (zoomed @ 105mm)

5 February 2010 The 365 Project

Today, nothing fancy…  These are water meters.  I found them right in front my apartment’s door.  It looks very interesting but, somehow with the lighting available, it looks a little flat, that’s why I popped my 2 speedlites, put blue gels on both of them and took some frames.  This particular frame is the one I like best.

Gear: Canon 7D + Tokina 11-16
Settings: f6.3 | 1/30 | ISO 200

Strobist info:

430EXII + blue gel @ 1/16
580EXII + blue gel @ 1/16
Trigger:  Canon 7D built in transmitter

Post processing:

  • A lot of dodging and burning
  • Sharpening and adjusted brightness and contrast
  • NO HDR!

Cheers everyone!

4 February 2010 Long Exposure, The 365 Project

On my way home, I saw that the cherry picker was on a different location and it was lowered :)   So I decided to give it a go!  There is something with this cherry picker… could be the color; I like blue… hmm (blanked out!)

It’s getting warm in Dubai lately…  And the clouds are starting to disappear.  Anyway, my 365 continues :)

How I took it:

Gear: Canon 7D + Tokina 11-16 + tripod
Settings: f9.0 | 60 secs. |ISO 100

Post processing:

  • Made the temperature of the sky cooler to enhance the blue sky
  • Dodging and burning
  • Applied sharpening and noise reduction

It’s weekend everyone! Have some fun!

3 February 2010 The 365 Project

Today was the toughest day so far… just nothing coming out.  No ideas, no nothing.    It’s 1 hour left before day 35 starts… Then this idea kicked in.  Saved by the bell :)

This is my Tokina 11-16 f2.8 lens, so far this is what I carry everyday with my 7D (and my 50mm f1.8mm).   This is the first time I introduced a new element on my photo… smoke :)   And no, this is not cigarette smoke, simply because I don’t smoke.  This is actually a water steam :)

Gears: Canon 7D + 50mm f1.8 ii
Settings: f6.3 | 1/200 | ISO 200

Strobist info:
430exii + umbrella on top left @ 1/16 power
580exii + green gel on the right @ 1/64 power
Trigger: Canon 7D built in transmitter

Post process:

  • Adjusted brightness and contrast
  • Added a light vignette

Tomorrow is weekend here :) yey!

2 February 2010 The 365 Project

This is my brother’s guitar :)   I always wanted to shoot this but I just can’t visualize it, a few minutes ago, the vision came… and it looks a lot like that :)

I received a lot of encouraging messages from my flickr acount and here on my blog; I really really appreciate those who dropped by and sent me a message to give out their support, that means a lot to me, I just wanted to thank you all!  Everyday I feel like I have to come up with something new, something that is worth trying and worth sharing.  Ideas don’t come easy most of the time, and sometimes your vision doesn’t represent the outcome of your work…  But with a little push and with an ounce of help from people close to me and those who I haven’t even met and send me encouragement… that feeds my imagination and fuels my passion for this thing called photography.

Again, to those who sent me encouraging messages and those who are following my 365, from my heart… THANKS!

Have a good day ahead!

Today was one of those days again… crunch time :)   Scratching my head ’till 10pm until this idea came up, wanted to give credit to my assistant for chirping a few ideas here and there and for holding the water source (the shower) for me.  Indeed a great help.  Would have been difficult to do this on my own.

I have something different on my head but this came out pretty interesting so I guess I’m going with it :D

Gears: Canon 7D + 50mm f1.8
Settings: f5 | 1/200 | ISO 200

Post processing:

  • Adjusted levels
  • Adjusted hue and saturation
  • Added vignette manually using brush

Strobist info:
580exII + lumiquest mini softbox III on the right@ 1/16 power
Trigger: 7D built in transmitter

How I took it? Simple, I took the flowers to the bathroom, put a background in this case a green towel, put a strobe, turn the shower on and fired away! (Again thanks to my dependable assitant!)

Take care!

/Mike

They say, everything has a face if you stare at it long enough.  Well in this case, you don’t have to stare too long to notice the faces on the matches as they burned.

Finally!  I have finished one month of my 365 :)   I took a picture every single day for the entire month… I’m giving my self a pat at the back :)    So far I am really happy with all the images I took for this month.  I hope I have given some nice ideas and hopefully motivate the inner photographer in all of us.

Thank you for following my 365 and now… 11 more months to go :D

30 January 2010 The 365 Project

This shot was taken at Ibn Batuta Mall a few hours ago, it belongs to Egypt Court.  I really find it interesting how this place was made, it is like a museum and a mall at the same time.  That is pretty much it for me today, need to rest and prepare for work tomorrow.

Gear: Canon 7D + Tokina 11-16
Settings: f5.0 | 1/20 | ISO 400

Post processing:

  • Dodging and burning
  • Adjusted contrast and applied sharpening
  • Applied noise reduction

Cheers!
